Hiya! I really hope this doesn't seem creepy but I met you at a concert a year or so ago because I really admired the fact that you got to take pictures of the band on stage- What I was wondering was, How does one obtain that kind of work? And what are your favorite kinds of shots to get? ALSO, what are the best techniques and settings to use in that kind of environment?
Totally not creepy. What show?! I’m glad you found me!
I got that job through my friend who works for The Examiner, an online publication. He contacts the band managers and venues and gets press credentials under his job title. That’s the key. In photography, it always pays to know somebody. (In anything really)
I’ve been photographing shows for a long time. That’s actually the first thing I began photographing regularly, and those were the first pictures where somebody told me, “Hey, you’re actually good at this.” So concert and band photography hits close to home.
I like venues with good lighting equipment. (Hard Rock Live!) My favourite shots are when the light creates the perfect silhouette or back-lits my subject in tune with the forward lights. I also like genuine crowd swooning shots. I try to get away with dragging my shutter if flash photography is allowed (but almost never is).
I can’t tell you my tricks, but I can tell you what you need.
A camera with high ISO capabilities is a must. You’re shooting in a dark lit room (almost ALWAYS), and you need a high shutter speed. You need a fast lens that can accompany your high shutter speed. My favourite lense to shoot concerts with is the 25-70. Also, a fast processing card and camera work well. When my 7D was in the shop I had to use my old school Rebel and it would freeze every seven shots or so to process images. Extremely inconvenient when you only get to shoot the first three songs.
Oh, and don’t forget the other 9 photographers pin-balling in the photo pit with you.
Do you remember when the news did a piece about pro ana and pro mia and used a picture from your myspace? I also remember a picture of your arm covered in stitches. Do you still have those pictures or any others from myspace?
yes, and they’re all actually on myspace still! i lost that hard drive so I make sure to log in every now and then. since JT took it over i had to like, “recover” them- but they’re still there.
however, they are hidden. so here are the two you’re talking about. i wish i still had that youtube link.
I’m working on a new project, and I need YOU to make it work!
Have you ever been bullied? By a lover, an ex-lover, friends, parents, anonymously, etc.?
Screenshot it. Send me the image. Also, send me an image of you. Your favourite image of you. Whatever image of you that you want to send me. Your face doesn’t have to be visible. It doesn’t have to make sense. It doesn’t have to be beautiful or artistic. There should just be a human in the image.
If you’re interested in participating, send both the screenshot and the image of yourself to email@example.com
